Missouri Conservation Corps organized and hosted more than 40 volunteer workdays in 2024, and our workdays were held in a variety of locations and weather conditions, ranging from hot, to pleasant, to uncomfortably cold. Despite the season, our last two December workdays were sunny, beautiful, and relatively warm for December. Kiwanis Park is a 20-acre public park that Missouri Conservation Corps has been working in since 2021. In fact, our very first volunteer workday was held here on a cloudy Saturday morning in April 2021. Since that first volunteer event we have cleared more than 16 acres of honeysuckle in the park.
Our late fall and early winter workdays frequently offer the most beautiful conditions for our volunteer events, with the brilliant sunlight of early winter illuminating the stark and leafless hickories, oaks and hackberries of the park. As daylight fades, the warm glow of winter twilight transforms the color of the sky. It has become a ritual for Missouri Conservation Corps to bring hot cocoa to our winter workdays, and the volunteers who are willing to brave the chill of a December afternoon are treated to a cup of hot cocoa as twilight fades from the winter sky and the lights over the parking lot begin to flicker on.
