Missouri Conservation Corps is excited to be going back to Arrow Rock Missouri this fall to improve native habitat in this picturesque and historic village in Saline County. We will once again be partnering with Missouri River Bird Observatory, the Arrow Rock State Historic Site, and the Columbia Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Our work will involve cutting and removing invasive privet on the trails used by the young summer campers during MRBO’s annual Young Explorers’ Camp. By improving the trails, we make it easier for the summer campers, and the year-round trail users, to spot birds, discover native plants, and enjoy the native habitat surrounding Arrow Rock.
Last year Missouri Conservation Corps and our hardy band of volunteers spent 140 total volunteer hours on two separate workdays in Arrow Rock, cutting privet along the trails and around the historic trees in Arrow Rock State Historic Site. We also discovered native plants, tiny frogs, beautiful trees, and a forgotten trail that will now be useful again. During these outdoor volunteer events we enjoyed a talk about local history given by historian Mike Dickey, and environmental education offered by Isabel, the incredible intern at Missouri River Bird Observatory.
This year’s volunteer workday in historic Arrow Rock takes place on Saturday, October 25th. Volunteers are asked to meet at 1 p.m. at the Arrow Rock Visitor Center, 39521 Visitor Center Drive, Arrow Rock, MO 65320. The volunteer workday will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. In case of rain, we will postpone the workday to Sunday, October 26th, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
