SUMMARY:Volunteer in Arrow Rock with Missouri Conservation Corps and Missouri River Bird Observatory
DESCRIPTION:Missouri Conservation Corps is excited to be going back to Arrow Rock Missouri this fall to improve native habitat in this picturesque and historic village in Saline County.  We will once again be partnering with Missouri River Bird Observatory\, the Arrow Rock State Historic Site\, and the Columbia Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.  Our work will involve cutting and removing invasive privet on the trails used by the young summer campers during MRBO’s annual Young Explorers’ Camp.  By improving the trails\, we make it easier for the summer campers\, and the year-round trail users\, to spot birds\, discover native plants\, and enjoy the native habitat surrounding Arrow Rock. \nThis year’s volunteer workday in historic Arrow Rock takes place on Saturday\, October 25th.  Volunteers are asked to meet at 1 p.m. at the Arrow Rock Visitor Center\, 39521 Visitor Center Dr\, Arrow Rock\, MO 65320. The volunteer workday will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.  In case of rain\, we will postpone the workday to Sunday\, October 26th\, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. \nVolunteers will learn to identify and remove invasive privet using hand saws and loppers.  Please bring gloves\, a reusable water bottle\, and dress appropriately for the work and for the October weather.  Missouri Conservation Corps will provide tools\, training\, plant education\, and bug spray.  We will also provide snacks for our hard-working volunteers. \nFor our younger volunteers\, MRBO and MCC will host an educational event for children.  A parent or guardian must accompany children participating in the volunteer work day. \nFor more information\, or to sign up for this unique volunteer experience\, please contact Stephen Bybee at stephen@missouriconservationcorps.org \nCome and join us on October 25th in the beautiful village of Arrow Rock to improve native habitat and help out our friends at Missouri River Bird Observatory and Arrow Rock State Historic Site!

SUMMARY:Community Tree Planting and Tree Education Event
DESCRIPTION:Our very first Missouri Conservation Corps community tree planting event will take place this week on Thursday\, October 23rd. This event will serve as a learning template for a future Columbia Tree Corps program that will use tree planting as a tool for relationship building\, canopy development\, and community engagement. This week’s event will focus on the Fresh Start for Sober Living office at 1101 Grand Avenue\, but additional trees will be deployed to nearly 30 households in the neighborhood. This tree planting event will allow us to put into practice the activities described in a tree planting grant proposal that we worked on last year with community and organization partners. \nThe planting event will run from 3-6 p.m. on Thursday\, October 23rd at Fresh Start for Sober Living\, 1101 Grand Avenue.  Community partners and organizations are encouraged to come and join us\, and organizations with community resources are welcome to bring a table to this event.  Volunteers from the neighborhood will be helping us to plant the trees\, and community partners\, organizations\, neighbors and friends are invited to join. \nThis will be the first community tree planting event in a series of events this fall scheduled to bring trees\, tree education and community engagement to Columbia neighborhoods in need of additional canopy.  If you are interested in attending or volunteering with us at these events\, please feel free to reach out directly and let us know.  If you have questions about this event\, or about our tree-planting plans for urban Columbia\, just ask.  This is a new leap for our organization\, and the trials\, difficulties\, and successes we encounter this fall will become the template that we use to build this urban tree-planting project into a more determined\, refined tree-planting program in 2026.  Thank you! \n

DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 31st naturalist and educator Laura Semken will host a family-friendly education event in Columbia’s Kiwanis Park. Laura has partnered with Missouri Conservation Corps on recent educational events focused on migratory birds\, native plants\, and the importance of native plants and insects to bird health and abundance. Laura is also a frequent volunteer with Missouri Conservation Corps and with Missouri River Relief\, and we are very excited to work with her on this unique event. This environmentally focused education event will take place at 10 a.m. at Odor Shelter\, on the west side of Columbia’s Kiwanis Park\, 926 College Park Drive\, and pre-registration is required. Laura’s description of this event follows below: \nMissouri Conservation Corps will be hosting a Family Day called Nest Success on Saturday\, May 31\, from 10 am until Noon at the C.K. Odor Shelter located at Kiwanis Park. Join MCC naturalist Laura Semken for this interactive event that will explore how birds keep their nestlings safe and well fed. You will get to hear a story\, explore actual nests\, then choose your bird species and try building a nest. You will also discover how habitat restoration within the park is helping birds succeed!
