SUMMARY:Flat Branch Creek Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Missouri Conservation Corps\, in collaboration with Missouri Stream Team\, is planning an early spring creek cleanup on Columbia’s Flat Branch Creek in March 2026.  March 8th has been proposed as a good day to clean a creek\, and we are very hopeful that the weather and the creek will cooperate.  Last year we brought over 65 volunteers to Flat Branch Creek to pick up trash and to remove furniture\, tires\, and other debris.  We are going to pencil in this date as our spring creek cleanup date\, and if things change\, we will let you know very soon! \nVolunteers will meet at Columbia’s Grasslands Park and will walk to the MKT Trail from there.  The cleanup will take place between Bridge #1 and Bridge #3 on the MKT Trail.  Missouri Conservation Corps will provide the gloves\, tools\, and training for this event\, and if the weather cooperates we will grill hot dogs in Grasslands Park after the cleanup. \nFor more information\, or to sign up for this event\, contact Project Director Stephen Bybee at stephen@missouriconservationcorps.org\, or use the Registration button below.

SUMMARY:Community Tree Planting and Tree Education Event
DESCRIPTION:Our very first Missouri Conservation Corps community tree planting event will take place this week on Thursday\, October 23rd. This event will serve as a learning template for a future Columbia Tree Corps program that will use tree planting as a tool for relationship building\, canopy development\, and community engagement. This week’s event will focus on the Fresh Start for Sober Living office at 1101 Grand Avenue\, but additional trees will be deployed to nearly 30 households in the neighborhood. This tree planting event will allow us to put into practice the activities described in a tree planting grant proposal that we worked on last year with community and organization partners. \nThe planting event will run from 3-6 p.m. on Thursday\, October 23rd at Fresh Start for Sober Living\, 1101 Grand Avenue.  Community partners and organizations are encouraged to come and join us\, and organizations with community resources are welcome to bring a table to this event.  Volunteers from the neighborhood will be helping us to plant the trees\, and community partners\, organizations\, neighbors and friends are invited to join. \nThis will be the first community tree planting event in a series of events this fall scheduled to bring trees\, tree education and community engagement to Columbia neighborhoods in need of additional canopy.  If you are interested in attending or volunteering with us at these events\, please feel free to reach out directly and let us know.  If you have questions about this event\, or about our tree-planting plans for urban Columbia\, just ask.  This is a new leap for our organization\, and the trials\, difficulties\, and successes we encounter this fall will become the template that we use to build this urban tree-planting project into a more determined\, refined tree-planting program in 2026.  Thank you! \n

SUMMARY:Volunteer to Remove Honeysuckle in Florissant on National Public Lands Day!
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are needed to remove invasive bush honeysuckle from the Hall’s Ferry unit of the Big Muddy National Fish & Wildlife Refuge. This area has significant ecological and historical value\, and you can help conserve and maintain this unit on Saturday\, September 27th from 8 am – 12 pm as part of U.S Fish & Wildlife Service’s National Public Lands Day. \nVolunteers will be carpooling to the work site\, as there is very limited parking along the road by the unit. Please meet at the parking lot just off of New Halls Ferry Road. Note: this lot belongs to the Augustine Institute\, which is not affiliated with this project\, so do not continue down or park on their main campus. \nWhat to Expect \nVolunteers will cut honeysuckle with hand saws or loppers and hand-pull smaller plants. Event hosts and willing volunteers will then apply herbicide to cut stumps to prevent re-growth. All tools\, materials\, and booklets on identifying invasive honeysuckle versus native species will be provided. A small-scale trash and litter pick-up will also take place. \nVolunteers will need to wear weather-appropriate clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty\, sturdy boots or closed-toe shoes\, a hat\, and sunscreen. Volunteers should also bring a reusable water bottle and a snack\, insect repellent (if preferred)\, and sturdy gloves (if you prefer your own\, but gloves will also be provided). A water jug for refills\, bug spray and sunscreen\, and a small handwashing station will be available. \nIf you are interested in volunteering\, please RSVP with Andrew Dreas at andrew_dreas@fws.gov or 660-537-6842. Updates will be given if inclement weather or cancellation occurs. Information can also be found here: https://www.fws.gov/event/npld-halls-ferry-honeysuckle-removal-project \n  \n
