Missouri Conservation Corps has had a busy four months since our first volunteer event of the year back in early March. Since then, we have organized and hosted volunteer work events in Kiwanis Park, Garth Nature Area and on the MKT Trail. We have cut honeysuckle and invasive pear trees, restored native habitat, and taught volunteers the importance of native plants in our environment. We have made discoveries in the parks, including turtles, snakes, beaver activity, and really cool plants that we did not know were there.
In late April and early May we were involved in a number of tree-related events in our community, including tree plantings, tree giveaways, and tree awareness campaigns. We also hosted booths at Earth Day in Columbia and at Birds, Bees and Blooms in Arrow Rock, and we organized a guided bird hike in Kiwanis Park with the Columbia Audubon Society.
As we now move into the hotter months of mid and late summer, we will be dialing back our honeysuckle removal activity just a bit, in order to give ourselves and our volunteers a bit of a break, and to wait until summer’s heat gives way to milder temperatures.
Despite the break in our habitat work, Missouri Conservation Corps remains very busy organizing and hosting outdoor classes for a local summer camp.
